The Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) allows for micro enterprises to pursue institutional financing, bypassing the need for collateral. Eligible businesses can get MUDRA loans under Shishu, Kishor, Tarun and Tarun Plus depending on the applicant and loan history. The loan amount can go up to ₹20 lakh if it meets the eligibility criteria. Department of Financial Services

MUDRA eligibility does not guarantee loan approval. Lending institutions such as banks review the applicant’s profile, ability to repay, documents and business activity before approving a loan.

Here are ten ways you could potentially harm your MUDRA loan application:

1. Submitting Incomplete Documents

Incomplete KYC, bank statements, missing business-related documents, quotations or any other information can slow down or harm your application. Review lender’s checklist before applying.

2. Providing Incorrect Information

If information provided in your application doesn’t match with the PAN/Aadhaar card records, bank account or GST documents, verification will be flagged. Always double-check information you provide.

3. Overlooking Credit History

Past EMIs or payments that are overdue, or high existing debt levels can impact lender’s decision. Check your credit history report before applying and try to rectify legitimate discrepancies if possible.

4. Requesting Too High or Too Low Loan Amount

Loan amount requested should align with what your business activity requires. Requesting too high or too low of an amount can weaken the application.

5. Weak Business Proposal or Cash-Flow Statement

Lenders need to know how you intend to run your business and pay back the loan. Vague statements like “will use this amount for business expansion” isn’t as strong as stating your equipment/ inventory/working-capital needs and how you expect those expenditures to translate into cash flow.

6. Poor Account History

Cheque returns, unreconciled transactions, regular shortages in your account or inconsistent repayment history can turn off lenders. Having disciplined banking habits can only help your application.

7. Loan Defaults

Existing loans that are in default or have significant repayment issues are likely to be a red flag for lenders. Just because MUDRA loans are backed by the government doesn’t mean lenders ignore your credit history.

8. Repurposing Loaned Money or Providing Incomplete Information

As mentioned above, purpose of fund should match the description given in MUDRA application. MUDRA loans are provided to support certain income-generating micro-enterprise activities, which include business within the manufacturing, trading, services and some agricultural sectors. Providing false information can disqualify your application. Department of Financial Services

9. Applying Without Understanding the Different MUDRA Categories

MUDRA categories are divided into four. Shishu (up to ₹50,000), Kishor (above ₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh), Tarun (above ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh) and Tarun Plus (above ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh). Additionally, entrepreneurs who have already taken a loan under the Tarun category and successfully repaid it are eligible to apply under the Tarun Plus category, as per the scheme guidelines. 10. Applying through Uncertified Agents

It’s always best to approach registered banks and utilise official government resources instead of third-party agents who guarantee loan approvals. Banks, Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs) and Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) participate in the PMMY scheme. Applicants can also use JanSamarth, another government-affiliated digital platform for Credit Linked Schemes (CLS) such as PMMY.

What NOT To Do When Applying for MUDRA Loan

Make sure your KYC and business documents are in order. Evaluate your existing loan obligations, understand how much you actually need and have a clear idea of how you intend to use the loan and pay it back.

Remember that since MUDRA loans are “collateral-free”, doesn’t mean your loan is pre-approved. While the Micro Units Development & Refinance Agency (MUDRA) doesn’t require collateral under the PMMY scheme, the lender reviews every applicant and their loan proposal.

Disclaimer: Loan approval, interest rates and documentation may differ for each lender under the MUDRA scheme. Applicants are advised to check with the lending institution or official government website for up-to-date conditions prior to applying.
